Janis Wignall, Bio Expo and Tech Manager
With Jeanne Chowning, Janis co-founded the award winning Student Bio Expo in 2000. As Bio Expo and Tech Manager, she will oversee all aspects of the NWABR Expo and website.
Over 25 years of experience and excellence in scientific research and science education. First 10 years, as a research molecular biologist at Immunex, a Seattle biotechnology company. On the cloning team of the gene Tumor Necrosis Factor Receptor (TNF-Rec) which was developed as the biopharmaceutical drug ENBREL, used in the treatment of Rheumatoid Arthritis. ENBREL is the world’s 3rd leading pharmaceutical drug with 2012 sales of $8.37 billion for Amgen. Second 10 years, as an award-winning K-12 science education educator for Immunex; awarded in 2000 a KCTS Golden Apple Award, a state level award for education from the WA Governor Gary Locke and Terry Bergeson, Superintendent of Public Instruction in WA for contributions to science education. Later years, as a founding board member for Seattle Biotech Legacy Foundation now Sustainable Path Foundation http://sustainablepath.org/ which promotes sustainability and health in the Puget Sound Region. Has 22 publications including papers in distinguished journals such as Science, Nature, EMBO and Cell.
