Joan Griswold, MIT, Curriculum Design Lead

 

Joan Griswold joined NWABR in 2006 as a science teacher with over a decade of experience in both middle school and high school classrooms. She is currently the Curriculum Design Lead for NWABR, in which she manages, writes, edits, disseminates and oversees field-testing for the Ethics in the Science Classroom curricula. Joan has been integral in developing ethics-based curriculum about HIV vaccines, stem cell research, animal research, humans in research, and introductory bioethics. Joan also presents NWABR curriculum nationally.

Joan helped establish the Student Bio Expo in 2000 and has served as Project Manager for this unique science program that connects high school students with mentors in the scientific community and allows students to present their work in creative ways.  

Joan is currently a community member of the Embryonic Stem Cell Research Oversight Committee (ESCRO) at the University of Washington, is past president of the Washington Biotechnology Foundation, and has participated in the Science Education Partnership and Integrated Science Partnership programs as a teacher. She also has experience as a laboratory assistant and clinical coordinator for a human clinical trial taking place at Oregon Health Sciences University. Joan received her BS in Biology from Lewis and Clark College in Portland, Oregon, and earned a Masters in Teaching from Whitworth College in Spokane, Washington.
