Jenn Pang recently joined NWABR in the fall of 2011 as the Student Bio Expo Program Manager. A unique science fair, the Student Bio Expo merges the understanding of biology with the creative spirit. Approximately 300 students work on this year-long project under the advisement of a mentor in a scientific field. This helps NWABR work towards the goals of not only enhancing STEM (Science, Technology, Engineering, and Math) education in the state, but also strengthening our local scientific community.
Jenn graduated from the University of Washington in 2010 with her doctorate in Molecular and Cellular Biology. Her studies were completed at Seattle BioMed, one of the world’s largest research institutes dedicated to the study of infectious diseases. Focused on investigating the bacterial genetics behind tuberculosis, Jenn’s graduate work was published in the Journal of Bacteriology in February 2012 in an article entitled, “The polyketide Pks1 contributes to biofilm formation in Mycobacterium tuberculosis,” which was featured on the cover of the same issue.
Having an interest in science education since her undergraduate days, Jenn has worked with several science education programs in the Seattle-area: Fred Hutchinson Cancer Research Center’s Science Education Partnership and Hutch High programs, Seattle BioMed’s BioQuest Academy, and Seattle’s Expand Your Horizons. In addition, Jenn helped expand a program that places UW graduate students in Seattle science education outreach programs in lieu of a traditional teaching assistantship.
